Gynecomastia is an enlargement of the male breast from an overgrowth of the breast tissue. Most of the time gynecomastia is a benign condition, its etiology may not be determined. In some cases, males may experience gynecomastia from endocrine tumors, medication use, liver & kidney disease, and genetic disorders. In certain cases, Dr. Majzoub will need to work with your physician to determine the etiology of your gynecomastia.
Breast reduction surgery can help those individuals who are self-conscious about their breasts. There are many different approaches to reducing male breast size, Dr. Majzoub tends to prefer those surgical approaches that minimize the scars on the chest. Dr. Majzoub frequently uses a combination of liposuction with an ultrasound tip and direct excision of the breast tissue under the nipple. Some gynecomastia cases require that the breast tissue be removed with scars placed under the nipple, this is often when skin needs to be removed from both the vertical and horizontal planes. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia and may take between 2-4 hours to complete.
Patients should anticipate the need to take 1 week off from work, additional time may be needed if you have a very physical job. The procedure is performed in an outpatient facility. Patients are encouraged to ambulate shortly after surgery and perform breathing exercises. There are generally 1-2 surgical drains placed in each breast which will be removed on your post-operative visits. A surgical garment is prescribed to help with the swelling and prevent fluid from accumulating at the operative site. Dr. Majzoub uses dissolvable skin sutures, you may shower in 3-5 days.
The results of male breast reduction surgery are immediate. Contour of the breast will change as the swelling subsides over the next 3 months. Incisions fade with time, Dr. Majzoub suggests that you avoid direct UV exposure over the incision sites and always wear sun block when exposed to the elements.
