Many women with large pendulous breasts experience difficulty with back, neck and shoulder discomfort. This is often due to the weight of their breasts which tend to put constant pressure on their back and neck. Additionally, women with large breasts may experience problems with skin rashes under their breasts and in some cases difficulty with certain types of physical activity. A breast reduction is a surgical procedure designed to reduce both skin and glandular tissue from the breasts. The procedure will lift the nipples up to their youthful anatomic position, and many times the size of the areola (darkened skin around the outer border of the nipple) is reduced to match the smaller shaped breasts. There are many different surgical approaches to breast reduction surgery, Dr. Majzoub adheres to those principles that are most reliable for maintenance of breast shape while minimizing visible scars. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient. The procedure generally takes 3-3.5 hours of operating time.
Patients should anticipate the need to take at least 7-12 days off from work. Most individuals note an immediate improvement in their back, neck and should discomfort. A surgical supportive brassiere is worn during the recovery period to help keep your breast weight off the incisions. Patients are encouraged to ambulate shortly after surgery and perform breathing exercises. Generally two surgical drains are placed in each breast, these will be removed on your post-operative visits. Dr. Majzoub uses dissolvable skin sutures, you may shower in 3-5 days.
The results following a breast reduction are often remarkable with an immediate improvement in your breast shape and noticeable improvement in your back, neck and shoulder discomfort. Swelling in each breast will slowly subside over the next 4-8 weeks. The scars will fade with time and are generally hidden in the inframammary fold and around the nipples.
